Cozy Tamale Spot ‘Factory Tamal’ Readies Essex Street Push
It’s a period of transition for the no-frills food enclave on lower Essex Street. (Some have taken to calling it a “food court.”) Both Sam’s Spring Roll and Cabalito Pupuseria – which opened within two months of each other in the spring of 2015 – closed shop last month.
With regard to the latter, there is already a replacement at 13 Essex Street. Factory Tamal took over the lease from Cabalito, and launches the week of January 15. On the ground, meantime, the identity of Cabalito was completely scraped and replaced. The housing of the roll-down gate now carries the branding of Factory Tamal, as does the paper in the windows.
This area of Essex Street was, at one time, a bastion of Judaica shops. Now it’s nightlife and budget eats.
