Shapiro Hardware has a new NoHo store.

While signs in the window 59 Bleecker Street announce a second outpost up the block at 7 Great Jones Street (formerly the Village Tannery), employees confirm what’s happening. This is a new home, and both will remain open until the “transition” is complete.

That transition seems nebulous.

Three summers ago, its immediate commercial neighbors Kaufman Shoe Repair Supplies and Downtown Floor Supplies – area stalwarts with a combined 100 years at this location – relocated elsewhere in the city, stoking fears of more luxury construction. It later came out that a nine-story development was positioning itself here. That never happened.

Last summer, the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved an application by architects Beyer Blinder Belle to restore the existing building at 59 Bleecker, but also replace the non-original “garage” section with a one-story replacement. The hardware store does not appear to figure into the plans. Hence, the word “transition.”

‘Mulberry Market’ Revises Opening Date in Little Italy to Early April

Mulberry Market did not open last month in Little Italy as previously disclosed. It replaces the decades-old MET Food, which was unable to negotiate favorable lease terms […]

Jonah Hill’s Vertigo-Inducing Vampire Weekend Music Video Just Dropped [VIDEO]

Vampire Weekend just dropped a music video for the new single, “Sunflower,” and they’re big-timing with the cast of characters. Directed by Jonah Hill, the trippy two-and-a-half-minute reel takes place at the iconic Zabars on the Upper West Side and Barney Greengrass, and quite literally spins (thanks for the vertigo, Jonah) past the likes of […]
