Shapiro Hardware has a new NoHo store.

While signs in the window 59 Bleecker Street announce a second outpost up the block at 7 Great Jones Street (formerly the Village Tannery), employees confirm what’s happening. This is a new home, and both will remain open until the “transition” is complete.

That transition seems nebulous.

Three summers ago, its immediate commercial neighbors Kaufman Shoe Repair Supplies and Downtown Floor Supplies – area stalwarts with a combined 100 years at this location – relocated elsewhere in the city, stoking fears of more luxury construction. It later came out that a nine-story development was positioning itself here. That never happened.

Last summer, the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved an application by architects Beyer Blinder Belle to restore the existing building at 59 Bleecker, but also replace the non-original “garage” section with a one-story replacement. The hardware store does not appear to figure into the plans. Hence, the word “transition.”
