‘Bar Belly’ Bounces Back on Orchard Street
The end-of-summer housekeeping recently concluded at Bar Belly on Orchard Street. The establishment reopened to the public last week after a brief hiatus.
The five-year-old bar, conceived and formerly known as Leadbelly, shut down in early August for renovations. Window scrawls at the time read, “working on our beach bod; having a facelift.” Now it says only, “We’re back!”
There is more to the story, though. There was reportedly a change in ownership. Silent partners Mauricio Garrett and Tommy Mendes allegedly bought out the assets from the group that founded the business five years ago. Silkstone, as it’s called (also behind the Fat Radish across the street), installed the establishment in 2012 at the expense of Sweet Paradise, whose bartender, Leah Dixon, would later open Beverly’s on Essex Street.
