Lakwena Brings her Kaleidoscopic Vision to the Bowery Mural Wall
The season is changing, which means another participant for the revolving door that is the Bowery Mural Wall. Earlier this week, contractors sanded then resurfaced the two-story canvas in preparation for the next artist on the docket.
We are told that the latest is Lakwena, a London-based artist who specializes in colorful, “kaleidoscopic” patterns. She began work yesterday afternoon with plenty of tape and utensils for tracing. The progress is predominantly obstructed by an array of construction materials for the East Houston rehabilitation project a few feet away.
Goldman Properties (owner and curator of the wall) hit a bump in the road this past June when it hired controversial artist David Choe, who bragged about an alleged sexual assault in 2014. His art was to have remained on display until this month, but community pressure on the real estate firm eventually forced their hand, and the mural was erased after three weeks.
