Big Belly Trash Compacting Bins Arrive in Seward Park
The upgrades keep coming at Seward Park on the Lower East Side. Most recently, the arrival of nearly a dozen new tech-savvy trash cans. Of the Big Belly sort.
Big Belly receptacles are solar-powered “smart waste” machines that cost upwards of $4,000 apiece. In other words, garbage is compacted. Up to 150 gallons of refuse, in fact. That means fewer pickups from the Department of Sanitation.
The newfangled trash cans have been around the city for a while, yet still relatively new for the Lower East Side. Sara D. Roosevelt Park was presumably the first recipient, having installed has had them since the summer of 2016.
