What was once “Chung’s Candy & Soda Stand” is back on the market. The tiny retail footprint at the northeast corner of Hester and the Bowery is now leasing. The last newsstand here – C&L Sunrise Grocery – folded last month after roughly five years on the black.
The token “retail space for lease” banner hangs from the shuttered security gate.
For more than two decades, the commercial nook at 149 Hester has hosted a Chinese newsstand of some sort. Thankfully, each subsequent proprietor left intact the fabulous ghost signage imparted by Chung’s in the 1990s. That business didn’t survive into the 21st century, but its hand-drawn Coca-Cola and 7Up lettering continues to attract the camera lens.
But will the writing stay?
