Bowery Boogie

Anti-Gun Mural Painted on Hester Street

Shots fired.

Muralist Otto Schade is throwing shade at gun control with this powerful new piece on Hester Street, just east of the Bowery. It was painted last week.

The liberty eagle’s wingspan runs the length of the brick wall, and is composed solely of weaponry. Machine guns and knives. And the bird is clutching a bullet wrapped in an American flag.

The piece is crowned (on the ground) with the morbid query, “Who’s next?” Overt commentary on gun violence in America, and how mass shootings are a new normal.

“I have to say was a really interesting experience painting this piece in Manhattan in Chinatown,” Schade wrote in an Instagram post. “Interesting reaction from the community.”

Schade is a Chilean-born artist based out of London.
