Locals Uneasy About Incoming Jarmulowsky Bank Hotel and its Nightlife

There is a fight brewing over the incoming nightlife establishment at the Jarmulowsky Bank hotel.

The Orchard Street Block Association, for its part, is already gearing up for the effort. They’ve distributed flyers of opposition in the immediate vicinity of the Jarmulowsky Bank Building (with the Monopoly Man) – first at summer’s end and now again this week.

Contrary to news last year that the Lower East Side classic would revert to commercial office space, the old Canal Street property will become an “upscale independent hotel,” after all. Yet, not much is known about the lodge itself or the operators. Tidbits have trickled out over the last severval months, though, including the proposal for a new venue (i.e. full liquor license) by a corporate entity called “Sixth Avenue Restaurant Management LLC.” Previous research revealed that this is most likely the same group pulling the strings at L’Amico and The Vine, two hotspots in the base of the Eventi Hotel located just south of Herald Square. The group briefly appeared on the Community Board 3 docket in August, but withdrew.

Neighbors, including the aforementioned Orchard Street Block Association, are anxious about the purported lack of communication from hotel principals.

“We have reached out to the developers (DLJ Partners) 3 times, but they declined to meet, saying they ‘weren’t ready,’ Tamara Daley of OSBA tells us. “Many local residents in the immediate area are taking this as a negative sign.”

Our inquisitive foray met a similar reaction. When reached for comment regarding the hotel and its restaurant back in July, DLJ partner Steven Carter, “there is no additional information to share at this time.” Our latest communique has gone unanswered.

Community groups in Chinatown and the Lower East Side are sounding the alarm about a luxury hotel set to occupy the Jarmulowsky Bank Building. The developer, 9 Orchard Partners, has declined several requests to meet and discuss their specific plans. Details about bars, restaurants, music, and nightclubs outlined in the hotel’s application to the State Liquor Authority remain unclear.

At a time of unprecedented development in the Lower East Side and Chinatown, residents are concerned about the impacts this hotel will have on increasing noise and air pollution, traffic congestion, pedestrian traffic, and how the hotel could exacerbate displacement in a neighborhood where tenants and small businesses are already facing tremendous pressure.

“Residents are very concerned that a luxury hotel developer plans to come to our neighborhood without any interest in hearing about the community’s concerns,” said Tamara Daley, one of the leaders of the Orchard Street Block Association. “We see what happened just blocks from us in so-called ‘Hell Square,’ a neighborhood plagued by drunken crowds, fighting, crime, traffic congestion, and noise pollution. We want to do everything we can to make sure that doesn’t happen here, and we are dismayed by the developer’s reluctance to engage.”
