Heavy Wind Detaches Ai Weiwei Installation from Essex Street Market
The punishing winds from yesterday’s Nor’Easter were not kind to the Ai Weiwei art installation affixed to the Essex Street Market. By yesterday afternoon, the series of banners basically became a sails. Sheets to the wind, you might say.
The section directly above Pizza Roma near Delancey Street is currently dislodged and sagging.
The half-dozen banner inserts are part of Weiwei’s “Good Fences Make Good Neighbors,” a joint venture with the Public Art Fund. Each illustrates a narrative scene depicting the “perilous journeys of refugees, driven by threats to their survival and also by hope,” according to press materials. The various pieces around town will be up for another couple months.
