Popular Japanese eatery, Soy, departed the Lower East Side last May after fifteen years in business. Their shoebox storefront has since remained a shrine of sorts, bereft of activity.
Another of its ilk seeks to open shop here. Application materials submitted to Community Board 3 indicate that a new Japanese restaurant is on the way. The as-yet-unnamed venture is helmed by Yudai Kanayama, who opened, and currently operates the acclaimed Izakaya in the East Village.
As for Soy, owner Etsuko Kizawa relocated the business upstate to the Catskills (Rosendale) back in August.
“I feel the Lower East Side (also the whole NYC) has become too much about façade, money and lifestyle and a small business like me is not as appreciated as it used to,” Kizawa told us last spring before the big move. “I was so ready to leave.”
Here’s a photo of their new upstate digs.
