Vacate Order Partially Lifted After 85 Bowery Staircase Replaced
Rehabilitation of 85 Bowery hit a snag this week after workers discovered asbestos while replacing the unstable staircase. Presence of the carcinogen on the third and fourth floors means that the timetable to completion is now delayed.
But the staircase is now complete, and the Department of Buildings acted in kind. The full vacate order issued back in January post-eviction was partially rescinded three days ago. According to a spokesperson for landlord Joseph Betesh, “[The partial rescind will] allow families to arrange and collect belongings in areas that will allow for abatement of the asbestos to begin.”
A Boogie informant sent along the following image shot at the entrance, showing the new hardware.
“We recognize how difficult this situation has been for the families and we will continue to provide high-quality hotel accommodations at our expense until the conclusion of work.”
In the meantime, the embattled tenants of 85 Bowery remain exiled.
