‘Cactus Store’ Kicks off Second Lower East Side Residency on Saturday

The Cactus Store is back for a second season on the Lower East Side.

The Los Angeles-based company has been busy of late, readying the vacant lot at 5 Essex Street. A quick visit reveals a forest-like setup of “hearty” bamboo shoots, quite the departure from the open space “theater setup” from last summer. The rear greenhouse shelter remained through the winter and will continue to function.

The Cactus Store is a product of Echo Park, in Southern California, founded in 2014 by Carlos Morera, Jeff Kaplon, and Max Martin. Their namesake products are often uprooted from the wild (i.e. backyards).

Gates open anew on Saturday, June 2. It’ll run through late-October.

The former tenement that stood at 5 Essex Street came down almost a decade ago, a few years before DLJ Partners, which also owns the Jarmulowsky Bank, purchased the property and its neighbor for $3.5 million. It remained a baron wasteland until the landlord imported the Cactus Store last summer for an inaugural run.
