Harold Hunter Day, Oct. 2015

Each year, the programming celebrating the life of skateboard legend Harold Hunter grows more ambitious. The eponymous nonprofit foundation behind the annual event – now in its 12th season – last spring transformed the one-day skate jam into a weekend-spanning occasion.

For the 2018 go-round, the focus is on what Harold loved most – skating, art, and photography.

The Ambitious 1960s Plan of ‘Instant Renovation’ of Old Law Tenements

With an ever-constant flow of stories about landlords upscaling tenements – and the resultant displacement of residents – it’s appropriate to revisit the little-known federal program of “instant renovations” from yesteryear. This housing rehabilitation pilot program began during the mayoral term of Lindsay, and seems rather bonkers. Essentially, a crane would cut through the roof […]

City Keeps Chinatown Park in the Dark over Light Outages [OP-ED]

Is the Department of Transportation stuck in neutral? Back in early 2017, the lights dotting Columbus Park in Chinatown began to fade, eventually shrouding the whole park in darkness. Being an early riser and accustomed to walking my Furbabies at 5:00am daily, I was forced to carry a flashlight in order to see. My inquiries to […]

Issey Miyake Boutique will Eventually Open on Kenmare Street [Updated]

That so-called jewel box development at Elizabeth and Kenmare Streets is a sore site for these eyes. Eye-grabbing teaser signage for Issey Miyake has been […]
