Kaikagetsu is now operational on Orchard Street, having opened last week. The Lower East Side establishment is the first stateside venture for Forrest Fooding Inc., a Japanese restaurant group.

According to the New York Times, Kaikagetsu’s proprietor, Yasuo Shigeta, imported three chefs who specialize in the cuisine of the mountainous Hida region of Japan. The Los Angeles-based creative director Tomoyuki Iwanam is also behind the project.

The signature dish served at 162 Orchard Street is hoba yaki, which incorporates miso-glazed meat and vegetables; customers can choose between à la carte and kaiseki menus.

Kaikagetsu was preceded at 162 Orchard by Wassail, considered the first cider-centric bar in Manhattan. Founded by Kickshaw’s Ben Sandler and Jennifer Lim, that establishment lasted just under three years before folding in December 2017.
