Lights Out: Columbus Park is Plunged into Darkness
Finding yourself in Columbus Park after nightfall might require the purchase of a flashlight. Indeed, nearly every light pole is out.
There are approximately eighteen light fixtures that dot this heavily utilized Chinatown park, twelve of which are situated along Bayard Street. In the lower part of the park (near Worth), a single light burns. From what we’re told, these lights have been dark since at least July, and that such extended outages run without remedy for long stretches.
It’s obviously a safety concern.
Meanwhile, locals continue to submit complaints to 311 with hopes that Department of Transportation will fix the issue (yes, it’s their jurisdiction).
However, even though Columbus Park is plunged into darkness, it hasn’t stopped the chess players from holding court. They bring in the battery-operated lanterns.
