Zenchai Tea Cafe on Rivington Street Calls it Quits
Matcha tea might be all the rage these days, but the hype apparently wasn’t enough to sustain this Hell Square tea room.
Zenchai Cafe, which specialized in Matcha, just called it quits the other day after spending a brief sixteen months at 94 Rivington Street. Ownership announced the news with a handwritten letter affixed to the window, blaming the closure on the brewing “market conditions.” Also known as sky-high rents, and further proof that daytime business doesn’t usually fare well in this over-saturated party zone.
The cafe opened in May 2017, having followed on the heels of the notorious Rouge Wine Bar. 94 Rivington previously operated as a bodega until August 2012 when the business consolidated its holdings with the SX convenience store down the block at the corner of Essex Street.
