When Unagi was under construction

For over a year, the tattered teaser signage at 60 Kenmare Street promised a Japanese eatery devoted to eels. That day arrived.

The storefront was cleaned up, and Unagi (Japanese for freshwater eel) finally debuted a few weeks ago. A corporate entity founded by Andrew and Samuel Pierce called Bros Seafood LLC is behind the self-proclaimed “all eel all the time restaurant.”

Inside those four walls is space for 20 to 30 people, plus a 1,000-pound eel tank where the sea delicacies are fished for meals. All the eels are reportedly imported from a dedicated farm in Isshiki, Japan.

This particular address is unique in that several Japanese businesses call it home, including Ramen Lab and Yakitori Tora.
