Fight for ‘Beastie Boys Square’ Resumes with New Mural at Ludlow and Rivington
Hype for “Beastie Boys Square” is re-energized.
Artist Danielle Mastrion is currently painting a new Beastie Boys mural outside Wolfnights at Rivington and Ludlow. This is the third such paint job by the muralist in five years on the spot made famous by the cover of Paul’s Boutique.
The work (and documentation) began yesterday afternoon. To maximum effect with the Instagram-worthy Beastie Boys low-rider parked curbside.
The mural is likely an attempt to refocus attention to the plight of Beastie Boys Square, a street co-naming fight spearheaded by LeRoy McCarthy that has been underway since 2014. It’s a notorious proposal, and one that often has Community Board 3 bristling.
