It’s the End for these 2 Chinatown Bookstores
Two relic Chinatown bookshops, with a collective half-century in business, are both finished.
Oriental Books & Stationery packed up its books (literally) last weekend, signing off after some three decades on East Broadway. We’re told that the owner decided to retire and close down.
The store at 29 East Broadway sold Cantonese and Mandarin periodicals, music, books, and tchotchkes.
And across the Bowery at 42 Mott Street, the Ming Fay Book Store is likewise concluded. This is reportedly not voluntary, though. Word on the street is that a rent hike is to blame here. This business had been here for about twenty years.
No bookstore is immune…
