Street Seat and Bike Corral Installed Outside Cafe Kaja and Dudley’s
Most of the Orchard Street block between Grand and Broome is now cordoned off for pedestrian use. The familiar flexible bollards and tan pavement paint recently arrived, marking the advent of a street seat and bike corral combo.
Department of Transportation and the Lower East Side Partnership proposed the curbside amenity last year in tandem with Cafe Katja and Dudley’s, the two businesses that will most benefit from the placement. It received approval from Community Board 3 in May 2018.
One year later, it’s here. Roughly eight parking spaces were eliminated to make this happen. The bike rack is already installed and in use, but the planters and furniture are still forthcoming.
As with all such pedestrian spaces, seating is for the general public, not for any specific business. Plus alcohol is prohibited.
