I scream, you scream, we all scream for … eye screenings. Such is the retail trajectory of Mott Street.
What was formerly a Häagen-Dazs ice cream shop is now yet another Chinatown optical store. Signage for Eye Genius arrived at 57 Mott last week.
As previously reported, this Häagen-Dazs outpost opened its doors at Mott and Bayard back in 1977. A purported rent hike forced them out last fall. Former owner Chusheng Wong, who took over the business in 2010, allegedly couldn’t sustain at the higher rate.

Nearly three years later, the Mini Rex/Juicebox Heroes sober karaoke concept is still missing in action. The fall 2018 opening, and later, a targeted winter debut, did not pan out. Spring bloomed and summer sweltered and still no launch on Ludlow Street. Much of the delay, at least initially, was owed to outspoken area opposition […]
Yesterday morning, the surviving south tower of the Beth Hamedrash Hagadol wreckage site collapsed, killing one construction worker and seriously injuring another. “A worker who leaves for a job site in the morning deserves to come home safely every single night,” Mayor de Blasio wrote in his “thoughts and prayers” Tweet in the afternoon. It […]

The fire department quickly responded and rescued both from beneath the debris. EMS was also on scene to treat the workers, according to the blotter on the Citizen mobile app. Little is […]

Another milestone reached for the billion-dollar Essex Crossing project. Two years after the second phase of construction commenced, the last of its developments just topped out. The fifteen-story building at 202 Broome Street (aka Site 3) reached the top last week. Token American flag marks the achievement. It took less than six months for the […]
