Moxy Hotels, the Marriott sub-label, prides itself on being hip. Here on the Lower East Side, though, that equates to destroying centuries worth of local history.
Up north in the East Village, five “landmark-eligible” buildings comprising 112-120 East 11th Street (across from Webster Hall) met the wrecking ball. The assemblage was described in a letter to the Landmarks Preservation Commission as “wonderfully intact ensemble of primarily early and late 19th century structures which are largely unchanged and representative of architectural styles of the era as well as the development of this section of the East Village.”
Not Long after this preservationist nightmare, the same landowner, Lightstone Group, scooped up four adjacent properties on the east side of the Bowery at Broome Street. Two different owners sold out to to the developers last August for a combined $56.6 million payday – 151 Bowery (Emmut Properties) and 145-149 Bowery (Gordon Lau).
In their place – an eighteen-story behemoth with 300 guest rooms and a gym, all across 85,831 square-feet of space.
Truly sad how, in the span of just a few years, the block of Bowery and Broome has lost so many historic structures.
