A ‘Suave’ Takeover of the Former Fat Baby is Underway

The former home of a problematic Hell Square nightclub could soon boast another.

The commercial unit that previously hosted Fat Baby at 112 Rivington Street has been vacant since Rob Shamlian cut and ran in 2017. A steady stream of real estate listings ensued, pimping the space for as much as $23,000 per month. Two suitors in the last year bit, so to speak, but neither proceeded.

Now, something called Suave Bar and Restaurant is attempting a takeover. Principal Erinson Salce hopes to impart a three-level operation with two bars and a menu of Spanish cuisine. According to his application with Community Board 3, full liquor with 3am closing times, is sought.

Given the sheer size and rent price of 112 Rivington, it’s tough to imagine how Suave won’t devolve into another club. It’s a space that already boasts a recent history of butting heads with the community. While operating as Fat Baby, the venue remained a thorn in the side of Hell Square pretty much since its arrival in 2005. Neighbors called it a bait-and-switch from the get-go, one that was oftentimes rowdy, noisy, and violent.

Could Suave be cut from that cloth?
