After 25 Years, there is No Supreme on Lafayette Street
For the first time in nearly three decades, there is no Supreme flag positioned above Lafayette Street. The storefront banner, which was under constant surveillance last week, is now deposed.
So much for the proposed facelift.
Indeed, the word on the street is that Supreme is staying on board at 190 Bowery. This location – the landmark Germania Bank Building – was initially a temporary refuge during store renovation on Lafayette Street. Eight months later, the space is covered in brown paper and “for rent” messaging.
Supreme was founded in April 1994 by James Jebbia. The distinctive red box logo with white Futura Heavy Oblique font is borrowed heavily from Barbara Kruger’s propaganda art.
