New Roma Pizza Shutters as Essex Crossing Looms

Posted on: October 30th, 2019 at 5:00 am by

New Roma Pizza, a longtime fast food fixture at the northeast corner of Delancey and Essex Streets, closed for good last night. And quietly, at that.

The contents of the pizzeria – furnishings and cooking equipment – are the subject of an onsite auction later this morning.

New Roma has been holding down 116 Delancey for two decades. The pizza joint was most often frequented by late night partiers and people waiting for the M14 bus.

The closure is another victim of the billion-dollar Essex Crossing development. This corner footprint is part of the original Essex Market (aka Site 9), which will be redeveloped, as part of Phase 3, into a mixed-use building split 50-50 between affordable and market-rate apartments. (The original plan had called for condos.)

There are no permits on file with Department of Buildings just yet, though.
