Former Home of Public on Elizabeth Street to Become 6-Story Office Development
The Public restaurant on Elizabeth Street closed down in June 2017. It spent fourteen years serving in the former commercial bakery, and picked up Michelin nods along the way.
Public was forced to close not by rent hike, but by construction on-premise.
Chef and Avroko partner Brad Farmerie told Eater at the time that relocating the restaurant wasn’t an option and that they worked tirelessly with the landlord to delay construction. “It was completely out of our hands,” Farmerie said. “We had really no choice.”
Said work will eventually yield a new building altogether at 210 Elizabeth Street, which also previously served as Gawker headquarters. Indeed, Department of Buildings issued permits this month for the construction of a new six-story office development. It’ll rise 75 feet and carry 17,794 square-feet of commercial space; and a retail unit on the ground level.
