On Holocaust Remembrance Day, Hillman Houses Vandalized with Antisemitic Graffiti
Yesterday was International Holocaust Remembrance Day, also marking the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp. Here on the Lower East Side, though, it was apparently occasion for some antisemitism.
Someone scrawled an antisemitic message – “fuck Jews” paired with botched swastika – inside the Hillman Houses at 500 Grand Street. The complex sits across from the historic Bialystoker Synagogue and is home to a large orthodox community (including disgraced Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver).
Assembly member Yuh-Line Niou immediately reported the images to the 7th Precinct, which is reportedly investigating the incident as a hate crime.
#Antisemitism is rearing its ugly head on #HolocaustRemembranceDay. On the Lower East Side in NYC, of all places. @NYPD7Pct @yuhline @BrianKavanaghNY @CM_MargaretChin @ADL @RepMaloney pic.twitter.com/nrF7AZW86M

Just was on the line with the precinct commanding officer. They are investigating and also have communicated the case over to hate crime unit. Will update. Thank you to @smelis73 for bringing to attention.
