The ‘Mahjong Social’ Mural on Orchard Street
The brick space made famous five years ago with Hanksy’s “Dump Trump” mural now carries a different message.
The nascent Chinatown Mural Project imparted a new artwork – its second – at the corner of Orchard and Canal Streets. Dubbed “Mahjong Social,” the piece shows four pigeons playing the game together. It honors the Chinese and Jewish roots of the neighborhood, along with more modern elements in the details like Black Lives Matter.
It took almost twenty hours over two days last week to complete.
Meanwhile, there is a GoFundMe campaign underway to help raise cash for future murals around Chinatown.
The Chinatown Mural Project is a local artist-activist collaboration between Peach Tao and Karlin Chan.
