Stanton Pizza Closes Thanks to ‘Uncool Landlord’
Stanton Pizza, the solid cubbyhole pizzeria at the southeast corner of Essex Street, is out of business. Another Covid casualty.
Taped to the front door is eviction paperwork, alongside a pointed message: “some landlords are cool, ours is not.” Presumably, there could have been some sort of impasse over rent.
It’s also worth noting that the building itself is up for sale with a price tag of $5.8 million. “Perfectly positioned in the heart of the Lower East Side,” according to the real estate listing.
Stanton Pizza was, for a time, one of the best slices on the Lower East Side. It held the designation for the four years following its debut in 2010. The management change in 2014 trickled down to the food itself, and was never the same.
