14-Story Eldridge Street Hotel Hit with Stop Work Order
The hotel newcomer underway on lower Eldridge Street – recently topped out at fourteen stories – met the might of the city.
Inspectors from Department of Buildings issued a stop-work order on 79 Eldridge about a week ago. It’s a full order which only allows work “to provide shoring for all staircases and provide design drawings.”
Delays are nothing new for this project. A hotel of some sort has been underway here in Chinatown for the better part of five years.

Designed by Michael Kang, the fourteen-floor development will house 48 rooms, plus an additional 1,243 square-feet of floor area earmarked for a community facility.
This forthcoming hotel is a long time coming for 79 Eldridge Street. The private parking lot was on the open market for three years before hotelier Nehalkumar Ghandi’s corporate shell “Eldridge Hotel LLC” – rumored affiliation with Wyndham Hotels – shelled out $5.3 million for the parcel in 2016.
