Bar Belly Expands Next Door with ‘Carlotta’

Bar Belly, the three-year-old nightspot on lower Orchard Street, just annexed the space next door.

Principals Tommy Mendes and Mauricio Garrett are poised to open a new 44-seat eatery called Carlotta. According to application materials submitted to Community Board 3, the team seeks a full liquor license for the establishment. The food focus is on Spanish tapas.

This side of 14 Orchard Street previously hosted Gohan-Ya, which spent three years here before merging last summer with sister restaurant Lovely Day in Little Italy.

Withdrawn from the docket last month, the applicants will again be heard by the SLA subcommittee tonight.

Bar Belly was forged three-and-a-half years ago from the ashes of its predecessor, Leadbelly, which was itself a Fat Radish spinoff.
