Pearl River Mart Secures New Flagship on Broadway

Bounced from its Tribeca headquarters earlier this year, Pearl River Mart is ready for another comeback, public records show.

Department of Buildings filings indicate that the Chinese home goods store will return to Broadway, this time a couple blocks north, closer to Grand Street. The space appears to be the 6,000 square-foot former Roozee Australia at 452 Broadway, as it was the only vacant retail space in the building.

The company is listed on the cost affidavit for related interior renovations totaling $50,000.

No official word from corporate as yet.

The store, founded in SoHo in 1971 by husband-wife team Ching Yeh and Ming Yi Chen, closed its last location due to the one-two punch of coronavirus and an unforgiving landlord, according to a blog post on the company website in December. In its nearly five-decade existence, Pearl River has pinballed around downtown.

Their fifteen-year tenure at 477 Broadway concluded in 2016 when the landlord jacked the rent with a five-fold increase to $6 million per year. But Pearl River Mart rebounded a year later with two locations, Tribeca and Chelsea Market, and later with space at the Museum of Chinese in America.
