Newcomer Tres Leches Cafe Keeps Orchard Street in Treats
A new bakery dedicated to all things tres leches is now serving in Hell Square.
DIU Tea didn’t survive the pandemic, and its former footprint at 160 Orchard Street is now occupied by Tres Leches Cafe Downtown.
The newcomer serves up a bevy of desserts, but also bagels, muffins, and coffees.
It opened last month, and is a spin-off of the Spanish Harlem original, which was founded in 2009 by Ronaldo and Julia Felipe. (Hence, the “Downtown” in the name.)
Apparently, the slices of Tres Leches Cake (about $4 apiece) are Ronaldo’s grandmother Maria Nelson’s secret family recipe, born in the Dominican Republic.
This particular store at 160 Orchard has seen difficulties in keeping a rather permanent tenant, ever since Fashion & Fashion departed in 2010.
