Masalawala Leaves Essex Street After Decade-Long Run
When real estate listings first surfaced last month, it was the first real indication that Masalawala probably wouldn’t last much longer on Essex Street. And sure enough, the ten-year Lower East Side veteran is now kaput.
Eater reported the scoop yesterday, noting that the lease on 179 Essex expires this month, and the owners decided not to renew.
Restaurateur Roni Mazumdar and chef Chintan Pandya, who opened the Masalawala in October 2011, will instead focus on the forthcoming Park Slope location, as well as the successful debut of Dhamaka at the new Essex Market.
There was no reason given for the sudden closure.
