Dr Smood permanently closed its Lower East Side locale, Dec. 2020

Echoes of Bereket abound as a new Turkish eatery is poised to open on the opposite corner of the once-beloved icon at Orchard and East Houston Streets.

The aptly named Ankara Turkish Restaurant last month signed a ten-year lease for the 3,000 square-foot store at 181 East Houston in what was once half of American Apparel, and most recently Dr Smood. The space had been vacant since the latter shuttered in December 2020 after three years in business.

Landlord S&H Equities is reportedly charging $25,000 per month for the ground floor and basement.

Ankara is expected to build out the space over the next six months before opening next spring.
