Sperone Westwater Gallery Panned Again

The piss-poor press streak continues for the new Sperone Westwater Gallery at 257 Bowery.  First to pan the building was the New York Times, calling it “More toolbox than jewel box” upon opening. Around the same time, we also fielded a number of criticisms from readers.  Now, the Real Deal weighs in.

259 Bowery Now For Lease

After news broke yesterday about the departure of York’s Shona Gallery from 1 Prince Street, another upper Bowery vacancy is currently in the works.  Indeed, it didn’t take too long for the leasing signs to appear at 259 Bowery in the wake of the Sperone Westwater Gallery inauguration last month.

While the Sperone Westwater tower on the Bowery continues to capture all the art headlines of late, a much smaller gallery store across the street just called it quits.  The cornershop at 1 Prince Street (aka 232 Bowery) closed within the last few days.

Preview of Karl Fischer’s 263 Bowery

Finally, some inside information on the new Karl Fischer condo development at 263 Bowery. It’s been over a month since the unsightly exoskeleton was removed.  Signs in the second floor windows continue to advertise the ground-level lease and the exclusive broker for the property.  That honor is bestowed upon Prudential Douglas Elliman.

Sperone Westwater Gallery in Full View

There you have it, folks. The Sperone Westwater Gallery at 257 Bowery is now in full view.  In the run-up to the forthcoming grand opening, the entrance has been quite a zoo.  Workers removed the last of the scaffolding late last week, and are now shuffling to and fro, busy with the final touches.

Sperone Westwater Gallery Elevator at 257 Bowery Turns Red

Behind the smoked, slatted glasswork of the Sperone Westwater Gallery at 257 Bowery, the hotly-anticipated elevator has received its defining “Ferrari-red” hue.  This just a few weeks after the lift was first installed.

Big Red is on its way to 257 Bowery.  Indeed, it appears preparations are now underway for the ambitious new elevator inside the Sperone Westwater Gallery.  A bare-bones platform was just installed behind the towering frosted glass, and has occupied different levels of the structure at various intervals.

263 Bowery Exposes Itself

In the race toward completion, the Karl Fischer development at 263 Bowery is finally catching up to the neighboring Sperone Westwater Gallery, which recently unveiled its new metallic trim and corrugated siding.  The black netting and scaffolding are history, liberating both building and sidewalk.
