After five months of gut work and remodeling, Dudley’s finally lifted the brown paper veil last week on its adjacent “deli” space at 87 Orchard Street. The shared wall was broken down to connect the two stores, the former being the onetime home of Guss’ Pickles (and later, Maraya Cigars). This added real estate – […]

Dimes isn’t the only Lower East Side cafe doubling down on the “D” (for deli). Let’s head five blocks north. Two months after breaking the news, the Dudley’s expansion remains in the renovation phase. Crinkled brown paper is still the only sight at 87 Orchard Street, where the popular Australian eatery plans to install complementary […]

The old Guss’ Pickles hovel at 87 Orchard Street will return to food use after a half-decade foray into tobacco peddling. You’ll recall that Maraya Cigars quietly faded from the block three months ago without much in the way of announcements to fans. Few seemed to mourn the indie business, though. Now the tiny space is […]

In what seems like eons, it was already five years ago that Guss’ Pickles departed the Lower East Side for Borough Park. A couple weeks ago, owners Joy Florentz and Kevin Joyce began selling product […]

Last week, Joy Florentz of the forthcoming Maraya Cigar shop offered up some juicy news. Or should we say pickled? In any event, to help fund her independent venture at 87 Orchard Street, Ms. Florentz is looking to sell the trademark Guss’ Pickles signage.

Those rumors about Mother-in-Law’s Kimchi assuming control of the old Guss’ Pickles HQ can now be put to sleep for the duration. Six months after the pickle stand decamped for Borough Park as Ess-a-Pickle, a completely different type of business is moving into the small storefront. A specialty cigar shop called Maraya.

With Guss’ Pickles officially gone from the Lower East Side (both the name and the business), the search for a new tenant at 87 Orchard Street has begun. A flimsy “for rent” sign is taped beneath their moving announcement. Asking price for the cramped quarters is $2,000 per month.
