MacDougal Street Synagogue Closes its 97 Allen Hostel

The rather shady hostel that’s been operating at 97 Allen Street, misleadingly named MacDougal Street Synagogue, is now kaput.

Down, but not completely out, underground hostels are still very much a reality in this town.  Though some are more conspicuous than others. In any event, there’s still some comfort in knowing that these institutions can survive amidst the trendy, multi-zillion-dollar hotel projects sprouting (or stalling out) all around the Lower East Side.
