The year is 2002 – CBGB is still a few years from becoming John Varvatos, the Bowery Hotel is still John’s Garage, the Avalon mothership is nowhere in sight, and the glass dildo of the Standard East Village is just another row of Lower East Side tenements.

The seventh annual Howl! Festival in Tompkins Square Park will begin September 10 at 5 pm, and run through Sunday afternoon. Tomorrow night, the Bowery Poetry Club is hosting a benefit for Tuli Kupferberg, famous poet, author, and co-founder of rock group The Fugs. Kupferberg recently suffered two strokes and is now blind. Funds raised during this event will help pay for his medical costs.
