For over two months, the Rapha Cycle Club pop-up at 352 Bowery has entertained the two-wheeled masses with bike-related exhibits and entertainment (Tour de France, film screenings), as well as limited retail offerings. The cafe portion of the setup was fueled by Third Rail Coffee and Stumptown. But all that’s about to end. The countdown […]

With numerous merchant and boutique closures this past year alone, upper Orchard Street has been through hell. It’s a veritable DMZ out there, with pock-marked streets, numerous vacant worksites, and exorbitant rents. However, the storefront of one recent vendor victim is bouncing back as, you guessed it, another gallery.

Discourse about the death of thrift shops and vintage stores is back on the table. The oft-heralded bargain district of historic Orchard Street continues to fade into, well, history. It seems like every few months, there’s yet another vendor closure to report. Since December, four merchants north of Delancey have called it quits – ZACC Fashions, S.K. Gift Shop, and Fashion & Fashion. Not to mention the disappearance of Kebab […]

The storied lighting district of the lower Bowery will soon lose two big-time players. Firstly, Bowery Interiors/Lite Elite at 148 Bowery is closing up shop for good. Yellow-and-red signs hanging ominously in the windows advertise a fire sale of store inventory.

If we build it, they will come. Not so for The Bowery Bazaar, the retail space comprised of 36 new designers and artisans, which opened last fall. It never really got off the ground despite the cool look of the space. Yes, they had the designers but they couldn’t attract the customers. For most […]
