This is what’s left of 5 Essex Street after two months of demolition work. The turn-of-the-century sanitarium and onetime home of Dembitzer Brothers Electronics is now just a pile of bricks.

As we speak, history is being dismantled and funneled through a demolition chute to a curbside dumpster. Indeed, the three-story building at 5 Essex Street, a onetime sanitarium and former home of Dembitzer Brothers Electronics and the Chinese New Taoism Association, is dying a slow death.
