Down, but not completely out, underground hostels are still very much a reality in this town. Though some are more conspicuous than others. In any event, there’s still some comfort in knowing that these institutions can survive amidst the trendy, multi-zillion-dollar hotel projects sprouting (or stalling out) all around the Lower East Side.

In short order, the squat two-story building at 300 Broome Street will grow a tumor. Choy Sung Auto, which has sported small “business for sale” signs in the past, is still kicking in the ground level garage. At least for the time being.

Those sidewalk mechanic shops that randomly dot the neighborhood are an interesting breed. Lacking any proper garage or lot, vehicles are mostly serviced curbside, directly in the path of oncoming traffic. Case in point, Y.S. Tires at 97 Allen Street.
