Chico’s artistic fingerprint at Masaryk Towers was seriously diminished last weekend. What little remained of his signpost mural on Columbia Street – “Living in Harmony” – was indelibly replaced with something less of the neighborhood.

Some hoop dreams on the Lower East Side. Masaryk Towers, the low-income cooperative at 69 Columbia Street, is the lucky recipient of recent Nike revitalization efforts.

For the third consecutive year, Steve Nash is bringing his Showdown in Chinatown soccer (nay, futbol) match to the Lower East Side. The event will be held in Sara D. In keeping with the theme of soccer pop-up shops, another such concept is coming to 276 Bowery, onetime home of the Feature Inc. gallery. In recent months, the interior was gutted and redesigned to accommodate this latest installation. The Gem Hotel at 135 East Houston is now shrouded in an obtrusive Nike banner-ad. In case memory eludes you, this was the former location of a Howard Johnson. Poor Yonah Shimmel, threatened with the passage of each day.
