NYU Spiritual Center: Ready for Action

Posted December 3, 2009 at 6:18 am

The big boys have come out to play at 58 Washington Square South, site of the new NYU spiritual center. Parked in the dirt lot is a towering pile driver and ginormous backhoe. Both pieces of heavy machinery seem ready for action.

Update: NYU Spiritual Center

Posted November 12, 2009 at 6:09 am

The construction site at 58 Washington Square South, the footprint of the old NYU Catholic Center, just got a bit more interesting.  Sitting on scaffolding up above street level is this fairly ordinary office trailer.  Given the strength of the iron bars and such, we shouldn’t be too worried, right?  Nevertheless, it still gives us […]

Maze of Plywood Around Former NYU Catholic Center

Posted September 24, 2009 at 6:10 am

A maze of plywood is currently taking shape at 58 Washington Square South, the former site of the NYU Catholic Center.  As we speak, workers are hammering away along the perimeter, installing a “Heavy duty sidewalk shed approximately 140′ long as per plans during new building construction.”  Based on this information, progress toward the alleged […]

Provincetown Coming Down

Last modified July 14, 2009 at 1:28 am

For many months, the Provincetown Playhouse on MacDougal Street lay inactive behind a shroud of dark netting and scaffolding. Thompson Street Hell

Posted April 7, 2009 at 8:11 am

Avoid the upper reaches of Thompson Street at all costs. That’s right, between the gravelly street (primed for pavement), encroaching sidewalk plywood, and ear-splitting noise, the scene is definitely migraine-inducing. And now the former Catholic Center is virtually gone. Related Reading:Down and Out [Bowery Boogie]

Down and Out

Posted March 26, 2009 at 8:36 am

Walking along West Third Street, it’s fairly obvious that the dismantling of the Catholic Center at NYU is proceeding rather quickly. In just a few short weeks, the rear of the building has been reduced to a glorified pile of brick and twisted metal. And as demolition crews continue to wield their heavy machinery, the […]

Church Chat

Posted February 26, 2009 at 12:04 pm

Yesterday afternoon, I walked past the recently shuttered Catholic Center at NYU and noticed the building shrouded in dreadful netting and scaffolding. Its imminent demolition is proceeding at a moderate pace, with mind-splitting hammer clanks quite audible along Fourth Street.
