While heading to Vanessa’s Dumplings for a quick fix this past weekend, we spied an intriguing couple covered in paint, wearing runners’ race numbers on their backs.

Eldridge Street between Broome and Grand remains largely a Chinatown enclave. While there are more mainstream establishments like Vanessa’s Dumpling House or Fontana’s, this stretch of retail real estate is predominantly populated by Chinese-owned businesses. Many a neighborhood resident mourned after the sudden closure of Fried Dumpling back in April 2009. The narrow hole-in-the-wall eatery was often cited as the best, most affordable dumplings this side of Chinatown. But once those security gates were drawn for the final time, Vanessa’s Dumpling House began to pick up much of the slack.
